There are an estimated 400 trillion nerve tracts that originate in the brain. The brainstem is the section of spinal cord where the 400 trillion nerve tracts meet up before they branch out and control every organ, tissue, and gland in your body: the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, muscles etc. The brainstem runs all the way down to the first (C1) and second (C2) cervical vertebrae, or bones of the neck. The brainstem has been nicknamed "Houston Control" because it is where all function is monitored and controlled in the body. The brainstem and nerve system can function best when the base of the skull, atlas (C1) and axis (C2) bones are all lined up in a way so the brainstem channel is at its greatest circumference . When these bones slip and get locked out of normal alignment- the channel gets smaller and irritates the brainstem and surrounding tissue. This compression effects the brainstem and its ability to send functional information out clearly. This is called a vertebral subluxation.
A vertebral subluxation results from a failure of the body to adapt to some stress or combination of stresses that continuously impact our bodies on a daily basis. These daily stresses breakdown the connective tissues that hold the upper cervical spine together and create a weakness. This weakness allows the upper cervical spine to malfunction and get locked in a stressed position. The stresses are an unlimited combination of three general types: physical, chemical and emotional. Any combination of these stresses can weaken the body to the point where they can produce a vertebral subluxation. A physical stress could be the result of a fall or slip down some stairs, an abnormal twisting of the neck or even occur from a traumatic birth. A chemical stress can come from the foods we eat that might contain pesticides, smog or smoke in the air that we breathe in, or chemically enriched water. Emotional stress can come from a bad day at work, a fight with a spouse or child, the loss of a loved one or even being around a group of people that you feel uncomfortable with. When these stresses result in a vertebral subluxation, it sets off a chain reaction of abnormal function and structural changes.
Some possible presentations of a vertebral subluxation are: irritability, trouble sleeping, nausea, indigestion, neurological defect, pain anywhere in the spine, decreased concentration, in-coordination, or the most deceptive: no symptom at all! The upper cervical specific procedure has seen great results with such conditions as: infantile colic, ear infections, ADD/ADHD, asthma, fibromyalgia, emotional disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, stomach disorders, allergies, migraine headaches, vertigo- to name just a few. Dr. Jarek's goal at OHIO Specific Chiropractic is to open up the brainstem nerve channel so your body can connect with your brain and your brain can connect with your body at its greatest functional potential. When the brainstem can function at its best, health can be expressed at its greatest.
