Can Patients with Osteoporosis Receive Chiropractic Care?
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become less dense and more porous. This effects the integrity bones, weakening them and making them more likely to break.
Generally speaking, you can still receive Chiropractic care if you have osteoporosis. Yes, people with osteoporosis have a higher risk of fracture. But, a Chiropractic adjustment, if done specifically and gently, does not come near the threshold of fracture, whether the bone is osteoporotic or not.
That being said, a chiropractor considers a patient's unique circumstances when developing a care plan.
A Chiropractor should not adjust a bone that does not have the physical integrity to receive an adjustment. If a bone or the connecting tissue lacks the strength to accept the adjustment, then it is contraindicated. It is also contraindicated to adjust a bone that has active pathological changes occurring to it. This includes malignancies (cancerous changes) and infections.
Specific chiropractic adjustments accommodate individuals' age, size, and health issues. A 300-pound bodybuilder is not adjusted the same way as a 10-pound infant. No matter your physical makeup, the goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to tailor it to your specific vertebral subluxation and correct it accordingly.
