3 Most Common Reactions to an Adjustment

An adjustment intends to normalize the function of the Nerve System. As nerve integrity improves, this can manifest in multiple ways. Let’s look at the 3 most common.

1. No Symptomatic Change

All healing starts at the cellular level. This is not always perceived immediately. Here is a cold, hard fact: Chiropractic is not intended to make you feel better, but to enable the body to work better.

Chiropractic is the most natural form of healthcare. We don’t artificially stimulate or inhibit function. Instead, we work with the body’s natural ability to self-heal and regulate.

When working with the natural body, there are two major limitations: Matter and time.

The matter, which is the Nerve System, might not have the integrity to bring about the changes needed or wanted. Secondly, the healing process is just that, a process. And all processes require time. The completion of this process can take longer than symptomatic changes and perceptions.

2. Patient Feels Better

This is the number one reason patients seek Chiropractic care and contributes to the majority of its success. Interestingly, though, this is not the most common manifestation. While this reaction is the most dramatic, it is a double-edged sword.

Our health care system is based on feeling good, not necessarily on functioning well. This mindset prevents patients from seeking out care when they feel good. Also, if they don’t start to feel better after a period of time under care, they stop. No matter the symptom (headache, stomach ache, backache, etc.), the body functions better with a good nerve supply.

3. Increase in Unpleasant Symptoms

Occasionally, the body responds to an adjustment by experiencing unpleasant symptoms. When the body is functioning at a greater potential, it may react by eliminating toxins or harmful substances.

Common unpleasant symptoms include increased body temperature, diarrhea and muscle soreness. While these symptoms can be unpleasant, they can also be manifestations of a body beginning to work better.
