How Does Chiropractic Work?

Human beings are self-healing organisms. And it’s this truth that makes not just Chiropractic work, but all healing arts work. Chiropractic differs from most other professions in that it does not claim to do the healing. The body does the healing.

Chiropractic gives credit where credit is due. It doesn’t claim that a drug or surgery did the healing. It doesn’t even claim that the adjustment did the healing. Dr. Stephen Duff, DC once said that “A Doctor of Chiropractic knows that the fool plays, “Doctor”-, while the real doctor within gets sick people well.”

Who or what is the ‘real doctor within’ then? Let me paraphrase Dr. Reggie Gold’s take on this ‘doctor within’:

“Say you cut your finger; what might you do? Well, you might run to the hydrogen peroxide bottle, pour it on, wrap it in a bandage, take a shot of antibiotics in one arm and a tetanus shot in the other arm. A week later you take off the bandage and it's all healed up.

Now did the peroxide, bandage, antibiotic, and tetanus shot heal the cut? If that is true, go down to the butcher shop, buy a steak, take it home and cut it. Pour on the hydrogen peroxide, wrap it up in a bandage, shoot it up with antibiotics or whatever you want. Now, will the steak heal? Of course not. You might say that’s ridiculous, of course, the steak won’t heal, it’s not alive. But that proves a very critical point.

Only life can heal. Your body as you sit here is making living flesh and blood out of the lunch you had yesterday. Built into you is all the wisdom of nature. And that Wisdom knows all there is to know about healing.”

Chiropractic works because your body works. Your body works because it is alive. Vitality, the life energy that animates us all, is the real worker in Chiropractic. In Chiropractic, we refer to this wisdom that heals your body as your Innate Intelligence.

Innate Intelligence utilizes your Nerve System as the main conduit in the healing process. Your brain and spinal cord send information through nerves to control all the movements we make, sense everything we feel, regulate all body organs and relate us to the outside world. This information can be interfered with.

If the bones of the spine misalign, they can irritate the nerves that pass between the brain and body. Chiropractic adjustments help realign these bones to improve communication. Better nerve communication results in better health and healing.
